Peru's Population
Peru's population in 2007 was approx 28 million. (Approx 29m in 2009).
54% (15m) of people live along a narrow strip of land between the mountains of
the Andes and the Pacific coast.
32% (8.8m) live in the Andean mountains,
13% (3.7m) in the jungle.
76% of the population live in Cities or towns.
The largest concentration is Lima with 30.9% (8m) of Peru's population.
Yep, that is nearly 1/3 of Peru's population.
In 1961 there were 1.26 milion people in Lima. It is estimated to be 9 million in 2009.
This is an incredible growth rate. This is largely due to the internal migration in the 1980s. People migrated fom the mountains to seek safety from the terrorist and a better future. This created some very big challenges for the governments of the day.
The second largest city is Arequipa with 2.73% (749,000) of Peru's population.
